May 4: Kumukit - Hawaii Energy Connection
The Kumukit - Hawaii Energy Connection HSBP boardroom was illuminating, to say the least.
The company, co-founded by Chris DeBone (photo), had its first trade show in 2007, to then start the business out of his Mililani garage. Doubling production meant moving into a two-car garage!
Since, HEC has installed solar on more than 8,000 Hawaii homes, successfully reducing a bunch of happy customers' electricity bill to $18/month. When asked what set Kumukit apart from other companies, Chris simply responded, "Resiliency:" The locally owned & operated company has successfully endured the ebbs and flow of the market, has reduced the cost to consumer by 50% since its inception, and can protect the consumer with some pretty amazing warranties on the product, production and workmanship.
Just how solar power generates energy was brought "to life" by a model on the warehouse wall. With several questions from attendees, the Boardroom also touched on topics such as the creation of a virtual power plant and coming up with the technology to enable car batteries to be bi-directional.
All of us left a little brighter than we came!
